Supporting Teachers

At Support CCS, we’re committed to ensuring Carmel residents know exactly where our organization and its endorsed candidates stand. We want residents to vote confidently and share their enthusiasm about our candidates with their neighbors and friends.

Support CCS  stands on six pillars–six values we believe will ensure the continued success and improvement of the Carmel Clay Schools:

  • Global Preparedness
  • Academic Excellence
  • School Safety
  • Supporting Teachers
  • Parent Partnership
  • Mental Well-Being

Let’s focus on the “Supporting Teachers” pillar today, showing:

  • Why it matters;
  • Why Jon and Kristina are the right candidates to uphold it; and
  • How YOU can help CCS thrive by promoting them.

What Supporting Teachers Means to Us

Support CCS recognizes that none of our goals can be achieved without our amazing teachers. We are proud to have some of the greatest educators in our state working right here in Carmel. In fact, just this year, CCS’s Teacher of the Year, Barbara Glenesk, was recognized as one of Indiana’s Top 25 Teachers of the Year!

Attracting and retaining world-class educators is not a matter of luck. It requires a community that appreciates them; it requires hiring district leadership they respect and trust; it requires electing school board members who know their value, listen to their concerns, and have the skills and experience to ensure they are fully supported to do their jobs well.

Support CCS is committed to promoting school board candidates who demonstrate respect for teachers by acknowledging their expertise, listening to their concerns, and seeking to ensure they are given the time, funding, appreciation, and resources they need to succeed in their work. We know that teachers’ working conditions are our children’s learning conditions, and that we all need to work together to ensure a first-rate experience for all.

We are honored that the Carmel Teachers’ Association chose to endorse Jon Shapiro and Kristina Wheeler. Like us, the CTA recognized that Jon Shapiro and Kristina Wheeler are incredibly qualified, and that their professional experience and demonstrated volunteer engagement in our schools over the course of more than a decade each would be tremendous assets in facilitating an environment of excellence for teachers and students alike. Fundamentally, as indicated in the announcement that accompanied their first-ever endorsement, the CTA knew that Shapiro and Wheeler can transcend partisan politics in order to best serve all Carmel’s students.

The Risks Of Getting It Wrong

School board members make decisions that affect the lives and livelihoods of our teachers. To ensure those decisions are supportive of our educators and their ability to serve our community, board members must be willing to listen to them and trust their expertise. They must seek to build relationships based on mutual respect. In a national media landscape where teachers are often vilified, we need Board members who will stand up for the truth, cut through misinformation, and advocate for collaborative problem-solving when issues arise.

If we do not truly listen to our teachers and make them feel heard and valued, we risk losing them to other districts or even to other industries.

Why Jon Shapiro and Kristina Wheeler are the Right Candidates to Support our Teachers

CCS has been one of the top performing and rated school districts in the state, and a primary reason families choose to live here. In order to maintain our success and build on it, as a board member, I would focus on a continued effort in seeking innovative ways to pursue academic excellence, strengthen partnerships between families, educators & administrators as well as ensuring our tax dollars are invested in meaningful and measurable ways.”

-Jon Shapiro

“Our educators are our district’s most valuable resource. We must offer them competitive salaries (enough for them to live comfortably in Carmel, should they choose), excellent benefits, and, importantly, the respect they deserve. We should also prioritize hiring more substitutes and Instructional Assistants for classroom-level support.”

-Kristina Wheeler
